some with the change of life and some because its just required!
before all this i dumped the bq ubuntu phone which wasnt cutting it and since then been dropped as well as unity desktop … aggghhhh!
First of all i dump the new bq x5 i bought, personally its the best phone ive had and was sad to par twith it but it went to good hands. I got me a samsung note 4 as needed the bigest screen i could get my hands on for my gigs im doing with backing tracks and the note 4 just cuts it in all aspects to the point when when the note 8 gets released ill probably break the bank and get one! the resolution is high as well is the spec! plus it works nicely for NFC payments. Im using songer pro on the droid to load my backing track sets and can use it to cue the songs along which is handy https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.boogieman.songerpro&hl=en
also i used this but it was bugggy as hell and crashed a lot, not something id trust on a live performance!! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.syntax.apps.backingtrackstudio&hl=en
the next big thing was upgrading to the samsung gear 3, now misfit buys pebble out and then dump all the existing pebble watch updates, so my 250 quid pebble steel just went down the pan. The samsung gear 3 is great but the battery lasts me 2 days compared to the 6 days on the pebble?! but hey ho goes cap in hand with the samsung note 4 and so to be 8 ! so i took the plunge – check this..
samsung gripes. samsung pay isnt now on the note 4 which is rubbish as i can still use pay using likes of android pay etc. the samsung gear 3 advertises it can do nfc payment but you cant install samsung pay on the watch as you cant install it on the phone?! so i have t wait till they push it standalone in a update. come on samsung get with it.
Well ubuntu dropped unity – which shocked me, but to be honest i had a couple of ubuntu phones and they just didnt cut it so wasnt surprised when they dropped the phone but was surprised with the dropping of unity! So i noticed they were switching to gnome so seeing 17.04 was released i just took the plunge on desktop and laptop and did two ne 17.04 installs along with the gnome desktop so i used the gnome ubuntu edition. Love it now gnome was the first desktop i used on linux and switched from kde to gnome mainly. Gnomes come on leaps and bounds almost like a mac in simplicity and ease of use but more how can i say configurable, with this i dumped thunderbird which doesnt look the best of mail clients and dropped back into evolution mail. Ill be honest its like a new lease of linux life and really enjoying it. Im looking forward to the new additions of apps that are lined up for gnome and new features coming in ill be doing some reviews.
here is some eye candy!
Last but not least i have some new kit im just testing out for my acoustic show –

I had to give this a go! Im loving being back on android for my mobile / tablet device after not such a good time with my ubuntu touch which is sad to me. Id thought id give it a whirl on the xps, the install wouldnt work at first and had to change my bios settings to uefi which werent enabled for some reason and then i ended up with a remix os install. Loved it just like a droid with a desktop gui and all the droid features! I was amazed by how all the apps worked and even 3d games such as GTA vice ciry!! The only app that never worked was wunderlist it just crashed!? i asked the guys at wunderlist they say they dont see any support coming off. Any way the laptop run great only problem is it felt restrictive for design. To top it off install it if you want social and general usage, media etc but for coding, cropping pictures, website creation im so used to my ubuntu desktop now. Have to give these guys 9/10 as they have nearly nailed it…..
here she is in all her glory the ubuntu editin dell xps 13 back on the OS it should be running for 2017. With a happy tux!!
i would blog more but i think micheal hall got it all covered here!
im just looking into not using libertine and just running apps like so from a terminal
I found it quite fast, quite solid and just a tad rough round the edges, bit cant see no reason why unity 8 wont be available soon on the desktop. I find this great bearing in mind ive been using the phone for around 2 years and now the tablet, I can use the same OS im familiar with on my laptop as well! Check out a quick update video.
here is my guacamole server! with guacamole you can setup your own remote server with vnc, rdp and ssh support. based on tomcat and open source. I installed this on top of ubuntu 16.04 lts.
i used this – chase wright blogged this and it worked for me!!
The following will run a full dist-upgrade then install Guacamole 0.9.9, Tomcat 8, and MySQL for you. All you have to do is pick a MySQL Root Password and optionally change the guacamole_user password.
Additional Credits to Emilio and Alex for the RDP fix(s) in comments section.

Setup MySQL, change the MYSQLROOTPASSWORD to whatever you set it to and if you change the guacamaole_user password here be sure to go back and change it in
mysql -u root -pMYSQLROOTPASSWORD create database guacamole_db; create user 'guacamole_user'@'localhost' identified by 'PASSWORD'; GRANT SELECT,INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE ON guacamole_db.* TO 'guacamole_user'@'localhost'; flush privileges; quit
Populate the database you just created. Again, change the MYSQLROOTPASSWORD
cat guacamole-auth-jdbc-0.9.9/mysql/schema/*.sql | mysql -u root -pMYSQLROOTPASSWORD guacamole_db
Now just log into your guacamole server using the default “guacadmin/guacadmin” and set it up. If you want you can remove all the downloads (cleanup)
# Cleanup Downloads rm libjpeg-turbo-official_1.4.2_amd64.deb rm guacamole-server-0.9.9.tar.gz rm guacamole-auth-jdbc-0.9.9.tar.gz rm mysql-connector-java-5.1.38.tar.gz
# Cleanup Folders rm -rf mysql-connector-java-5.1.38/ rm -rf guacamole-auth-jdbc-0.9.9/ rm -rf guacamole-server-0.9.9/
Well its been a while since i wrote a blog i prefer the video blogs now, thats just me being lazy! Been fairly busy with work and as well as getting the ubuntu HD5 phone and ubuntu M10 tablet which has been great just what ive been waiting for we also got ubuntu 16.04 LTS so i decided to re-setup my laptop and home media server as well as adding a back up server using the built in back up service in ubuntu which i have to say was breeze to setup and should have done it a long time ago! Sorting out my music collection and files from scratch has been a mission but all went great. Im using owncloud for file and contact / calendar sync which installs on all the devices and just works great. Im now using emby media server which kicks the ass out of plex for lots or reasons and transmision server for the occasional torrent. Zoneminder for the cameras is the best, rock solid and works well remotely and never burps once you have got over the semi hard task of setting it up with all its niggles with php zones and mysql config files.
Been back and forth to spain as usual and just love the place. Ill be posting some new photos for you to see of malaga and the castle there. Malaga central has to be one of the places to visit. I watch TV and its all marbella this, marbella that! you never visited spain till you been in land and enjoyed spain for what it really is not whats its glammed up to be on TV, as its not all like that trust me.
Band wise ive been out of the picture for a 6 month break and working on my own stuff which has been great, got myself another alembic bass which i love specially for the amount of different noises it makes for recording, ill be putting some stuff out again soon. Ive rolled rubber soul of now and looking around for other bands to mingle and and take a step back and let others do the work! have to say ive had a great time playing with the lads, pauls a good friend and frank getting on as they say and ready for retirement sure kicks the ass out of a lot of drummers ive worked with, style wise can play anything and timing wise cant be beat, great vocalist to. Ive been asked about reunions with old bands which for one im not interested – i dont have time for people who for one are sneaky, underhanded, not loyal and just trouble makers. So on that one get what i created and shove it were the sun dont shine its had its day, talk about flogging a dead horse. Any way to the future and the new music im creating and the new musical experiences i can encounter and new pubs not just the one that will book you.
Now i know all the good people in my life i keep them near, all the others i have for sure rejected and want nothing to do with.
Love, peace and happiness to all the ones i love and karma to the bitches i hate, you know you are.
