with the recent release of wily werewolf in fact today! i thought id take the plunge. A couple of days ago OTA 7 was made available for the ubuntu touch phone which id been waiting for as id been having a bad experience in regards to phone locking and when selecting a text waiting for the names to show and then waiting for the message to load which was getting pretty annoying and just randoms locks and the phone slowing so thought the OTA 7 would fix this which it did in a way but had to install the OTA 7 update then factory reset the phone, ever since then batter life has been tons better, no white screens on facebook and also gained auth on web pages and copy and paste so i basically can now log on to a remote transmission with the username and password and then copy and paste a remote torrent file which wasnt possible before. The only problem is that auth doesnt remember the user pass so everytime you want to go in you have to input the user pass everytime unless you put the whole user and password in the url getting rid of the browser doing the auth in the first place? but the ability to copy and paste the url makes all the difference 🙂 So far the phones great experienced problems when adding accounts on dekko mail client after upgrade were it crashes adding the smtp account but once added asks for password and just works so not so bad. Just waiting for vpn and a vnc or remote desktop client. File manager gained SMB so it goes to browse my network and finds computers but cant access them as it says no file type, but i just put in smb://192.168.10.1 and that shows the file shares available on my server and let me copy files across my network to the phone. The upgrade before i did factory reset also told that i had no music on my phone from the music player but there was music there. After the wipe and reinstall the music appeared and works fine. The OTA makes the phone slicker and is heading in the right direction now. Roll On OTA 8
Wily Werewolf on the desktop
Because the laptop was all hooked as needed it i tried a dist upgrade which killed my laptop! I booted of a fresh 15.10 wily werewolf DVD and managed to rescue my files to a usb key and the rest was on the cloud – nice fresh install and copied across files required and re-setup my cloud which is all great. No noticeable differences apart from my fans are not going crazy on my laptop (dell xps 13) like they was and its defiantly a lot slicker. Own cloud is missing the icon on the top bar like last time but usually fixes when i install everpad but thats not availble yet and never usually is for a week or so, so means i have to use evernote through a browser until somebody rolls the deb files for 15.10 on the PPA…. Installed all my usual programs and used all the preinstalled drivers, tested steam and it goes like the clappers with killing floor so dont see no need in installing the graphics driver using the intel installer as it wont be available yet anyway! If your looking at upgrading take a back up! But i prefer a fresh install anyway. Roll on 16.10 and convergence……………..
i used to use tomahawk as a client for spotify but now like every other clients it wants premium membership to spotify, ace player though plugins to grooveshark and last.fm and loads of other sources.
the website is here or just add the PPA to your apt sources. The different PPA are here select your distro apt get update and apt-get upgrade and then install, apt-get install tomahawk
to install the spotify client that will play without premium do this from a terminal.
sudo apt-add-repository -y "deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free" && sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 94558F59 && sudo apt-get update -qq && sudo apt-get install spotify-client then the libcrypt fix as it doesnt just install straight out of the box on ubuntu 15.04
wget http://security.debian.org/debian-security/pool/updates/main/libg/libgcrypt11/libgcrypt11_1.5.0-5+deb7u3_amd64.deb sudo dpkg -i libgcrypt11_1.5.0-5+deb7u3_amd64.deb
The intel ubuntu compute stick.
This is a computer on a stick, big features include hdmi, bluetooth sd card slot, wifi and a 1.33 GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F processor at the attractive price of seventy five pounds plus vat! the downside is this has one gig of ram and 8 gig of storage. For one the ram is only enough to say run your browser and a couple of tabs! The space on the 8 gig is consumed by a restore image and a one gig swap file leaving 6 gig which is almost taken fully by the finished install, I installed a few required tools and it filled it! so i hacked the install to use the SD card for my home folder otherwise your well screwed. If you dont know how to hack the fstab and add the sd card as a home folder im pretty sure you ill run into trouble straight away. I use this for my desktop computer or a coupke of mornings a week for a say 5 hours and just do general tech support on it. IE web browser open couple of tabs and team viewer and everpad is the limit. Im looking at pulling the plug on it around 3 or four times in this time as it just the swap and memory full. Im going to add a one gig swap file on the sd card and see how i get on with that …..
to finish up id recommend to nobody to buy one of these sticks unless they can hack away at it or you will just be disappointed id buy the windows version which has 2 gig of ram and 32 gig storage and learn how to hack ubuntu on it as the ubuntu version to me is just a total waste of time and effort.
Follow this tut and start handbrake again and then try selecting DVD rom and let it scan and select start 🙂

I managed to get all systems hooked into vivid vervet yesterday, id potentially held the upgrade due to intel drivers on my xps sputnik and brand new shining intel nuc i3. The intel graphics driver that gives the acceleration for games, steam etc is required on a stock ubuntu install and is currently only supported on 14.10 by intel. But like all good hackers i deceided to take the plunge and go through out seeing the team at canonical just dished me vivid for my BQ4.5. The nuc was playing up a tad and this is my main CCTV system for the house and unfortunately at this precise moment in time with my harassing weird neighbours i need to have my car / house and all angles covered! i use zoneminder in a full time recording no motion just full so i dont miss a thing, i have this serving 5 cameras and throwing alerts and remote viewing to my mobile which i watch full time when on high alert! any way i wanted it on on vivid with the intel drivers and this fix does it nicely ..
sudo nano /etc/lsb-release
and add this DISTRIB_RELEASE=14.10
for now just put a hash in front of the other lines.
then download this ( i have ubuntu vivid 64 bit so downloaded 14.10 64 bit from here -> https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads
then you will need this libopenvg1-mesa as the installer doesnt know were to pull this from i just got it from here -> http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/m/mesa/libopenvg1-mesa-dbg_8.0.2-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb
install the libopenvg1 then install the intel deb then i went to my programs and started the intel installer – this should run all the way through and then reboot and you got the updated graphic drivers!
big thanks to robin at ubuntu fun for featuring me on his ubuntu website in germany – check it out -> http://ubuntufun.de/
love the look of this site, full on ubuntu themed 🙂
Yes its arrived, i couldnt wait for the case but check this out..
dead simple get a terminal and type the following: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:adilson/experimental
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install choqok
After installation has completed launch Choqok (look for a little green bird icon) from your app launcher and follow the account sign-in prompt that appears to get things set up.
works a treat the problems i have
- be better if you could choose gtk version
- image missing of tray icon
- only mobypicture picture plugin would work
- could do with direct quick tweet on taskbar
cant grumble notifications show up and it works well 🙂
